HISTORY-WISE - We had so many requests that people enjoyed the newsletter and wished we would continue, that I have decided to go ahead and occasionally send another newsletter.  I enjoy doing them, so it's certainly no hardship to me, and as long as you are enjoying it, we'll keep sending it.

The month of September was the final month of our touring ministry.  As we mentioned in the last newsletter, we have retired from the touring ministry, but we'll always be in ministry somehow, somewhere.  We will include those activities in the MINISTRY-WISE section towards the end of this newsletter.  We don't know where this all will take us, but God does, and we trust Him to lead us and we trust we'll follow in His perfect plan for our lives.

Our final concert of the touring season was in September in Louisburg, KS with our dear friends there at Louisburg Baptist Temple.  On Saturday night they had a fish fry and antique car show, then Frankie was the main attraction.  The weather cooperated perfectly and it was a beautiful night.  Several of Frankie's cousins came from the Kansas City area, one of whom he had not seen in several decades.  One of the ladies of the church gave us a huge "goodie" basket, another friend gave us several books, but the prize of the whole evening was a collage of events from our lives and ministry assembled together by our dear friend, Jack Smith, and framed in a 16 x 20 frame.  We will treasure that forever.  Thank you, Jack.

Below are some pictures from that evening, from several of our friends and family.  My thanks again to son Brian for assisting me in inserting these pictures.

One of Frankie's latest experiences was the fact that he found a guitarist from his very first band.  That was obviously tremendously exciting for him.  And whereas Frankie has often shared in his testimony that he auditioned for that band with the song, Unchained Melody, he said he had his doubts that perhaps he had remembered wrong.  But not so, said the guitar player, who was 18 at the time.  He definitely remembers Frankie singing that song.  Is that cool, or what?

Frankie has a new job - he is the booking agent for Haskell and JoLee Cooley, who are southern gospel music evangelists.  We have mentioned Haskell on different occasions as producing our last two or three CDs, singing on them with us, and using some of his accompaniment tracks.  But now we'd like to let you know that they have been in ministry for 29 years, and Frankie can get them booked into your church.

They are both anointed of God and very talented.  Haskell is a fantastic pianist, having accompanied the famous Cathedral Quartet for five years.  His piano arrangements are fabulous, and will thrill you.  Together with his wife JoLee they write all the music they sing, and JoLee plays bass guitar as accompaniment.  The lyrics to their music are deep and thought-provoking, and some are even fun!  Combine all that with a southern gospel base, and you have the makings of a wonderful event with the Cooleys.  They, too, will come for a love offering, and they drive their own motorhome for distances.  Send Frankie an e-mail and consider having this precious couple for "A Time Of Refreshing," as their theme declares.

We both dealt a lot this past month with the reasons we had to stop touring - our bad backs.  Frankie's has progressed very well, and he does fine when he doesn't "lift anything heavier than his underwear" (instructions from his chiropractor!)  He's actually able to lift small things, although when we come home from a shopping trip, it's "one bag at a time" into the house, back out to the car, "one bag at a time", etc.  Sure is time consuming (can't you see it?), but we have to do what we have to do.  We even ask the clerks to bag each sack lightly so we older people can carry it!  They never mind responding to our whimsy.  I wouldn't think we're the only old people who have made such a request!

Other things you don't think about - we can't even make our own bed.  The mattress is too big for either of us to lift even the big corners, so we eventually had to invite our daughter over so she could take the sheets off, we'd wash them while she was here, then she made our bed for us!  (Sneaky way to get our daughter over here!)  Now if someone will just come over and vacuum..... :)

Back-wise, I (Phyllis) am still having a rough time with lots of pain, but I am finally beginning to have more pain-free time now than time with pain, and more frequently, and that is HUGE for me.  Because my situation is so "roller-coastery" (don't you just love that word?), we have been unable to make any kinds of plans, because when we did, we often had to cancel because of my condition, and that has been frustrating to all concerned.  God continues to reassure me that I am healing, and as Frankie said recently, when you look back to where you were and where you are now, we can certainly see signs of healing.  Those signs were real slow in appearing until just these past few days when I've seen marked changes.  I do still have the sensitivity issues, but there have been times I have felt those have lessened some too.  My white shorts are still the "outfit of choice" but I have had to make some adjustments on occasion when those white shorts just weren't appropriate!

And to those of you who have been so faithful in praying for our back situations, we can not thank you enough.  You have truly sustained us, and I think have moved us along in our healing, more than probably even we know.  I have recently had what I had hoped would have been a turnaround, but it seems it was just a lengthy reprieve, for which even I am so thankful, but with the spinal decompression I'm getting, we feel we are headed in the right direction.  Recently a local pastor and members of his church prayed for me and anointed me with oil, and that transpired just shortly before my "lengthy reprieve" so perhaps the two were related?  I'd like to think so.  James 5:14 and 15 do work.

Our youngest daughter got married recently and they are expecting grandchild #15.  How proud we are of all of them.

 Valens Vignettes -

This is a new feature to our newsletters.  As we reflect back on 18 years of ministry, we'll share with you some of those events:  some funny, some not so funny!   Frankie and I have had fun reminiscing here.

I was teaching the children at a concert a song that included clapping at one point, and they just weren't clapping.  I couldn't understand children not clapping.  However, after the concert, we were told that the church had split over clapping (?!?!?), and we got the non-clappers!

While having breakfast at a hotel before our morning concert, Frankie noticed that some women seemed to eyeing him.  He was dressed rather fancy, so just thought that was the cause.  However, when we arrived at the church and sat down on the front pew to wait for the service to start, I looked over at him, and he had a wonderful case of "gaposis!" No wonder the girls were staring!

After our concert, a family had invited us to stay with them for the night, so we followed them home.  Upon arriving, they told us they had to go to a class reunion and they left us - to babysit their three children!

One church had scheduled us for a concert, but the night before the concert they canceled the concert (we weren't sure why), but they paid us $500 NOT to sing!
BLESSINGS-WISE - All glory to our Heavenly Father!  What they're saying.

*** ...when I just told my kids that you were retired now - and you would not be doing any more concerts, they were both SAD...You touched a lot of lives at our concert [high school in Halstead, KS in May].  What a wonderful memory!  Thank You!
*** I am glad you are continuing the newsletter.  I always enjoy reading it.

We had several responses to our announcement about our retirement, and below are some of those.  More next time:

***Dear Frankie and Phyllis:  I want to take this opportunity to say Thank You for your 18+ years of dedication to serving our Lord Jesus in your ministry.  As you both were out there on the road traveling all over the United States and beyond.  You did this all by faith and whole lot of prayers.  Your ministry was a real testimony to the thousands you came in contact with (including me and my family) and I believe through your words and songs you have touched many lives by sharing your love of Jesus Christ and letting all know that He could be a part of their life too (Just A Prayer Away).  That He wants to be with them in their good times and bad times. You were out there letting people know "You Are Not Alone". I Praise God that our paths crossed in September 2002 and that I could share in your ministry.  Your a wonderful friends and I look forward to being a part of the Valens next chapter.  May God Bless you both with Re-Newed Strength and Good Health soon (3 John 1: 2-3).    He is not finished with the Valen's yet!
***Frankie & Phyllis, congratulations on your retirement (not from ministry, but from touring)!  That is awesome!  Enjoy that cup of Chai many times over as you continuously reflect on God's faithfulness!  Wow, how privileged you've been to serve Him (and will continue to be).......and what an encouragement you have been to so many people.  Thank you for blessing and encouraging us so!!  Speaking for Mark Brooke, Buddy Pitezel and Stanley Johnson, [Forgiven Quartet] we love you guys and look forward to seeing you again soon!
***Just a kind word to let you know what a blessing that you have been to our church and to Rick and I. I hope that you receive total healing for your entire body. THE LORD IS OUR HEALER AND HE SAID ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE TO THEM THAT BELIEVE, AND HE IS NOT LIMITED BY OUR AGE. HANG IN THERE GOD IS OUR STRENGTH.
***I second the motion to have you do your e-mails.  You are the only ones out there presenting the truth on some key issues -- KJV, aspartame  and other such issues.  If just a few people change because of this news you will have saved lives.  I've shared information about the artificial sweeteners with my mom and I think she's stopped drinking diet pop.   This is having a huge impact on her mental capacities.  1-2 years ago my Dad would get me aside and say things to suggest Alzheimer's.  He no longer does this.  Maybe you didn't realize  till now how much this was a part of your ministry.  Praising God for You!!

KJV-WISE  - This column is a regular feature of our e-newsletters. We maintain that the Authorized King James Version of the Bible is the only pure Word of God.

It's a well known fact that once a person takes a small step away from the truth, it just gets easier and easier to pull farther and farther away.  This same principle applies to the new bible versions of today getting away from the pure Word of God, the Authorized King James Version.

From an article in Time magazine, September 29, 2008, comes the following headline:  "The Good Book Goes Green.  A color-coded Bible is geared to environmentalists."  And from that article we read:

"Green runs through the Bible like a vine.  There are the Garden and Noah's olive branch.  The oaks under which Abraham met with angels.  The "tree standing by the waterside" in Psalms.  And there is Jesus, the self-proclaimed "true vine." ... He dies on a cross of wood ...

"Now there is a Bible trying to make gardeners of us all.  On Oct. 7, HarperCollins is releasing The Green Bible, a Scripture for the Prius age that calls attention to more than 1,000 verses related to nature by printing them in a pleasant shade of forest green, much as red-letter editions of the Bible encrimson the words of Jesus.  The new version's message, states an introduction by Evangelical eco-activist J. Matthew Sleeth, is that "creation care" -- the Christian catch phrase for nature conservancy -- "is at the very core of our Christian walk."

"Using recycled paper with soy-based ink, The Green Bible includes supplementary writings by, among others, St. Francis of Assisi, Pope John Paul II, Desmond Tutu and Anglican bishop N.T. Wright.

"...Mainline Protestants have long been green, and a Pew Foundation study recently found that 54% of Evangelicals -- and 63% of those ages 18 to 29 - agreed that "stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost."

"There is one catch.  The conservative Christians who drive Bible sales don't tend to favor the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) used in The Green Bible.  Yet publisher Mark Tauber thinks green Evangelicals will leap the NRSV fire wall.  He adds cheerfully:  "I wouldn't be surprised if you see so-called big Bible publishers come out with a green edition."

Psalm 24:1 says, "The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof."  The earth is who's?  The LORD's!  Aside from the fact that the environmental movement is New Age based, now it has been taken one step further to marry it to a per-version of the pure Word of God.  I suppose that should not be too surprising, considering the way our world is headed.  Once one begins tampering with the pure Word, it really doesn't matter which direction the tampering takes.  Thus this version focuses on "green", rather than on the whole purpose of God's Word - to tell the world about God's greatest gift - His wonderful Son, Jesus, who, yes, died on a cross of wood, but forever cursed that wood.  The bad just gets worse.  God help us!

P.S. The Foreword is by Desmond Tutu, a well-known Communist.  That speaks for itself.

HEALTH-WISE - "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest...be in health..."  III John 2

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA)]

This is a medication that is familiar to many of us.  The e-mail we received stated the following:

I received this information from a friend whose mother recently passed away.  Apparently, this was caused by a medication that is deadly. Here are the details and I suggest you pass it on to your loved ones and others.

I would like to thank those of you who expressed condolences on the recent passing of my mother. She suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while she was driving home from my house on 7/30 and passed away on 8/3. My mother's stroke and passing was an enormous shock to my family because she did not have any symptoms or risk factors for a stroke. Just the week before she had gone to her doctor for a check up and received a clean bill of health. She did, however, develop a cold while she was visiting me and had taken Alka Seltzer Cold Plus for 3 days. Since her passing, we have learned that Alka Seltzer is one of the many cold medicines that contains Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which can cause hemorrhagic strokes or cerebral bleeding even with the first use. I am forwarding a list of other medications that currently use PPA. These medicines are supposedly being recalled but my mother just purchased this medication less than two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger for years, we unfortunately, did not.

I urge you to review the list of medicines with PPA and avoid these medications.  All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:

Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant * Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements * Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control * Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine Effervescent * Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (cherry or orange) * Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Original * Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough Medicine Effervescent * Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Flu Medicine * Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus Effervescent * Alka Seltzer Plus Night-Time Cold Medicine * BC Allergy Sinus Cold Powder * BC Sinus Cold Powder * Comtrex Flu Therapy & Fever Relief * Day & Night Contac 12-Hour Cold Capsules * Contac 12 Hour Caplets * Coricidin D Cold, Flu & Sinus * Dexatrim Caffeine Free * Dexatrim Extended Duration *  Dexatrim Gelcaps * Dexatrim Vitamin C/Caffeine Free * Dimetapp Cold & Allergy Chewable Tablets * Dimetapp Cold & Cough Liqui-Gels * Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir * Dimetapp Elixir * Dimetapp 4 Hour Liquid Gels * Dimetapp 4 Hour Tablets * Dimetapp 12 Hour Extentabs Tablets * Naldecon DX Pediatric Drops * Permathene Mega-16 * Robitussin CF * Tavist-D 12 Hour Relief of Sinus & Nasal Congestion * Triaminic DM Cough Relief * Triaminic Expectorant Chest & Head * Triaminic Syrup Cold Allergy * Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough

I just found out and called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children:

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink) * 3D Cold & Cough Cherry * 3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund.

To confirm these findings please take time to check the following:

KID-WISE -

***I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her.  I would point out something and ask what color it was.  She would tell me and was always correct.  If was fun for me, so I continued.  At last she headed for the door, saying sagely:  "Grammy, I think you should try to figure out some of these yourself!"
***When my grandson Bill and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects.  Still, a few fireflies followed us in.  Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandfather.  The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."
***When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past). For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say, "And all girls."  As this soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this at the end, my curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, "Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?"  Her response, "Because we always finish our prayers by saying, "All men!"
***My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grammy, do you know how you and God are alike?"  I mentally polished my halo while I asked, "Ho, how are we alike?"  "You're both old," he replied.

THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS-WISE - We recently received a phone call from the pastor of a small church in North Carolina.  While there in concert several years ago (2001), the 1990 van we had at the time "died."  It would have taken more to fix it than we felt we could handle, so purchased another one.

In the process we donated the "dead" van to that church, because they mentioned they had someone who could perhaps work on it, and we were glad it had a place to go.

The pastor who called told us that van got an overhaul, has 260,000 miles on it and it is still being used to deliver meat!  Is our God awesome, or what?

FYI-WISE -  This e-mail came to us from a local police officer here in Derby where we live.  However, I would think it would be worth reading for anyone to take caution.

Security information - A word of caution from Terry Love.

A number of people attending church and funeral services in Derby and Mulvane have had their vehicles burglarized during services. We recently recovered more than half a dozen discarded stolen like items from Derby and Mulvane in Park City. Checks, ID materials, Social Security cards etc. all gone. These thefts have been for the purpose of stealing purses, brief cases and wallets left in the cars. Folks need to be reminded that they should NEVER leave such items in the passenger compartment of the car, much less in plain view!!  One elderly couple's debit card was hit for over $4000.00 of debits. This will be refunded by the card company but who wants to go through the ID theft Issues???

A basketball in my hands is worth about $19.
A basketball in Michael Jordan's hands is worth about $33 million.
It depends on whose hands it's in.

A baseball in my hands is worth about $6.
A baseball in Roger Clemens' hands is worth $475 million.
It depends on whose hands it's in.

A tennis racket is useless in my hands.
A tennis racket in Andre Agassi's hands is worth millions.
It depends on whose hands it's in.

A rod in my hands will keep away an angry dog.
A rod in Moses' hands will part the mighty sea.
It depends on whose hands it's in.
A slingshot in my hands is a kid's toy.
A slingshot in David's hand is a mighty weapon.
It depends on whose hands it's in.

Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in my hands is a couple of fish sandwiches.
Two fish and 5 loaves of bread in Jesus' hands will feed thousands.
It depends on whose hands it's in.
